Psychological, Social, Spiritual and Bereavement Special Interest Group

The first PSSB SIG meeting for 2016 will provide some updates for SIG members and a presentation on the role of Speech-Language Pathologists in palliative care, as well as ensuring sufficient time for networking and sharing between colleagues.

Speaker: Laura Chahda BHSc (Hons), MSpPath, PhD (Candidate) School of Psychology and Public Health, Latrobe University

Topic: The role of the Speech-Language Pathologist in palliative care

Allied health professionals such as Speech-Language Pathologists (SLP) can be a valuable and influential member in the palliative care team. The SLP can be essential in assisting persons with end of life decisions and thus potentially help with advance care plans pertaining to a person’s communication and nutrition/hydration status. Given the lack of published research and resources of standardised protocols or procedures regarding the role of SLPs in palliative care contexts, there is a need to explore with SLPs working in palliative care about the current practice or strategies they utilise to implement their role within this specialised clinical setting and whether these have been tested or proven to be considered successful. This presentation is based on the current research in the role of the SLP in palliative care settings highlighting what contributions SLPs can offer to not only persons nearing end of life but also to the palliative care team
